Wilmington Trust

Types of Fraud

At Wilmington Trust, we're committed to helping you keep your financial and personal information safe. As part of that commitment, we'd like to help educate you on three common types of scams, used to gain your personal information:

  • Phishing leverages email
  • Vishing leverages phone calls
  • SMiShing leverages text messages

These techniques are designed to mislead you into providing personal information such as account numbers, PINs, Social Security numbers, and login credentials (username and password). You may even receive a fraudulent email that appears to come from Wilmington Trust and contains our logo. Often times, you're made to think your attention is needed immediately and may even be provided a link to a page to enter personal information.

Remember:

  • Unless you initiate the contact or we are completing an application for you, Wilmington Trust will NOT request personal information, such as your Social Security number, Credit/ATM card number, or mother's maiden name
  • NEVER give out your personal information in response to an unsolicited email, phone call or text message
  • Forward any suspicious emails to phishing@mtb.com that appear to be from Wilmington Trust and request that you click on a link to enter your login credentials or personal information. Never supply any account or login credentials to suspicious emails
  • If you believe you have been a victim of fraud related to your Wilmington Trust accounts, notify us immediately so we can take action to help you

Tips to Protect Yourself from Phishing, Vishing and SMiShing Scams

  • Never respond to any phone calls, emails or text messages requesting personal information
  • Delete emails before opening them if received from anyone you do not recognize
  • Ignore emails or text messages that threaten termination of service if you do not follow the instructions contained in the message. If the email or text message appears to come from a company that you do business with, contact them directly to discuss/report the message
  • Never click on hyperlinks within emails, tweets, posts or text messages if you believe they may be fraudulent; hyperlinks may contain a virus. Instead, retype the company name into your browser
  • Always look for "https://" and a padlock on legitimate websites that require the input of personal information
  • Use a SPAM filter, anti-virus software and a personal firewall
  • Keep software updated (operating systems and web browsers)
  • Keep your computer clean from Spyware
  • Check & monitor your credit report regularly
